To find out more about the type of drug rehabilitation taking place inside CDCRs prisons and their effectiveness, I interviewed two inmates, one which I will call Travieso and the other which I will call Cholo. Travieso is serving his 13th year of his 15 year sentence at California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison (SATF). Cholo is serving his 10th year of his 13 year sentence at California State Prison Los Angeles County (CSP-LAC). Between the two of them, they have done time in nine different California prisons including: Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, California State Prison (CSP) Los Angeles County, CSP Sacramento, CSP Corcoran, Folsom State Prison, Kern Valley State Prison, Salinas Valley State Prison, Calipatria State Prison, and California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison Corcoran. This has given them the opportunity to experience how these facilities differ from each other, witness the drug problems, and see what programs and se rvices are offered to inmates who struggle with substance abuse. I asked them both a series of questions and to no surprise, their answers seemed to echo each other. Through my interviews with Cholo and Travieso, I quickly realized that the CDCRs website has a way of glorifying their focus and efforts on rehabilitation. From the information I received from these inmates and my research, there is only one drug program offered in prison, and its called Narcotics Anonymous (NA). From what was described to me, NA is an inmate-led peer support group for recovering addicts, where they share their experiences/stories and follow a 12-step program. There is no real addiction counseling or intervention from doctors or therapists. This class always has a long waiting list to get into, which can be about a year wait or longer. The waiting game often discourages inmates from signing up, unless they have a parole date coming up. In CSP-LAC, each yard offers two NA classes, each made up of 30 inmates, and lasts one year long. Each yard houses about 1000 inmates, which means that the drug rehabilitative program (NA) can only be utilized by 6% of the prison population per year. In addition to this, once inmates finish their NA program, they go back to their routine prison life, dealing with the drugs and temptations on their own. Prisons do have program counselors, but both Cholo and Travieso say that their counselors dont really care, which makes meaningful treatment difficult. Meaningful treatment cannot be achieved in a place where staff members are also often the same ones smuggling in contraband and drugs into the prison for a nice extra payoff. Staff members whose mission is supposedly to successfully reintegrate offenders into our communities, contradict that with their crooked actions. To find out more about these inmates feelings, views, and opinions on this issue, I asked them, What do you think contributes to the drug addiction problem inside prison? Travieso claimed that prisons lacked programs to keep inmates productive. At SATF they are regularly put on lockdown and Travieso believes that the reason most inmates turn to drugs is because they are bored, depressed, stressed and tired of the same routine of daily prison life with nothing to look forward to but walls. Similarly, Cholo said , emotional distress is the reason why drug addiction is a problem in prisonjust waking up and realizing youre in prison makes you miserable and you just want to find an escape. I took some time to reflect on their words and realized that while in prison, these inmates suffer imprisonment in many different forms: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual†and they have no one to positively support them, leaving them nothing else to turn except violence and drugs. After my research and interviews I was able to conclude that the idea of rehabilitation in CDCRs prisons is great in theory, but not in practice. There is a dire need for more programs that support drug addiction recovery inside prisons. The more programs there are, the less waiting lists, and more of the inmate population will have access to self-help. This may include services such as addiction counseling, mental health services, drug detox, behavioral therapy, doctor visits, and more interaction with experts who genuinely are there to rehabilitate. Having regular visits by counselors, psychiatrists, therapists and physicians will provide inmates with a dependable support system and consistency. Instead of continuing to lock down humans that are already locked up, CDCR should give them something productive to do. By providing more jobs or even hobby classes, inmates can have something to look forward to, something to get them out of their cell and temporarily escape their repetitiv e routine in hell. Art, music, and crafts are just some examples of therapeutic ways inmates can express themselves and relieve physical tension, mental stress, and emotional anxiety. For the purpose of time and argument, I am not going not to go into depth about each and one of these styles of evaluation. It would make sense that the human resources department would perform the evaluations, but when you work in a business that employs over 1500 people, not only would it be a little hard for the HR department to conduct at least the once a year performance scopes, but also knowing which department they work and using that departments guidelines as a basis for their performance. Furthermore, the HR officer does not have a full understanding on what takes place in that specific department or how that employee is performing on a day to day basis. So, from what I was told, that is why they have the department directors perform the yearly assessments. My father actually used to be one. He was the Director of Pharmacy for almost 20 years, until he stepped down and became the Director of Chaplain Services, which has been almost 5 years doing that. This group mostly shop out of peer influence and the desire to stand out so impulse buying is synonymous with them. Wesfarmers can strategise to put up shops in areas concentrated with this class of shoppers. This locations is a near universities and colleges or residential areas and tap this readily available cash. The grocery stores can also benefit from unexploited market by targeting low-income earners. This is viable because the low-income earners make the largest population of most economies Jobber and Ellis-Chadwick (2012) and groceries are a necessity. With affordable prices, this segment would comfortably choose to shop, hear. The company can open outlets in this areas and offer prices that are pocket friendly for the target customers. This in turn leads to a flow of customers hence getting increased profit due to high numbers of customers. Marketing mix Goi (2009) defines marketing mix as set of marking tools used by firms when developing marketing objectives for the target segment. The mix referred to as 4P (product, price, promotion and place). In order to reach out effectively to the proposed market segment, Wesfarmers need to consider the 4P marketing mix. It is important for the company to research about the products that are favoured by these categories of people. In order to attract the teenage and young adults to buy clothing and accessories at their stores, Wesfarmers Limited has to consider the style of the products on offer. This is because the products need to be age appropriate and acceptable to the target group (Armstrong Et.al 2012). The brand name is also very important as this category buy due to peer pressure and so is likely to buy brands that their friends vote. The packaging of the products should be appealing to this age group to encourage purchases. After-sale services and warranties on products encourage buying as the shoppers gain confident in the quality of the products. For the lower class grocery shoppers, the company best gain confidence from them by offering products and service that they commonly seek in a grocery store. The products should be of good quality and packaged hygienically and attractively. According to Goi (2009) price is the amount a customer is willing to pay for a product. This is the reason the cost of a commodity may vary from one shop to another and one location to another. Wesfarmers can adopt a pricing strategy for teenager and young adults group apparel and accessories section by doing a research to find out how much this category is willing to spend on various product ranges. When adopting prices it should put in mind different payment methods at the disposal of the targeted customer. In this case, young people love to flaunt with technology and thus introducing cashless and online shopping platform is rewarding to both parties (Hanson and Kalyanam 2007). This group love bargains. Therefore, price cuts and discounts appeals to them very much and should be a strategy to adopt when targeting them. As for the grocery stores for lower-class citizens, product pricing should consider the market rates in these areas. Available payment options should be a consideration. Discounts and special offers appeal the most to people on tight budgets (Birnik and Bowman 2007). Therefore, Wesfarmers should consider discounting of products and special offers occasionally. According to Armstrong Et.al (2012), promotion is defined as marketing communication. It incorporates advertising, public relations, sales promotion and direct marketing. It considers how to reach out, when to reach out, who to reach out and through what medium. In order to inform young people of existence of an apparel and accessory shop of choice, it is important to choose the right medium to convey the message. Today, young people get most of their information electronically. Therefore, it would only be wise to use internet media advertising service, television and radios to reach out to these people (Armelini and Villanueva 2011). In addition, billboards can convey the same information. The message customised to the taste of the target customers appeal the most. To market the grocery store television and radio channels as well as billboards can deliver the message effectively. The grocery stores should also be located in area that is accessible to low income earners if the strategy is to work. The fifth P to consider in marketing strategy planning is people. Sriram, Chintagunta and Neelamegham (2006) describe people as human actors that take part in service delivery. For both outlets, the company must ensure that employees portray the right image. Employees of the company should be friendly and professional at work. They must have the capacity to handle business matters efficiently and knowledgeable about the business. It is the responsibility of the management to make sure that new members of staff get training on all company operations. Conclusions Wesfarmers is one of Australias largest companies. It has increased its portfolio of business over the years in diverse fields. It aims at giving returns to shareholders by satisfying the customers first. The main strength of this company is its diversified brands on offer and the trust it has gained in over a century of service. However, the company faces a challenge from competitors who offer similar products at lower prices. The company has the potential for expansion to other countries. The drop in the value of the Australian dollar affected the companys profitability during 2016 financial year. However, the company can strategise to explore new markets in groceries and apparel and accessory sections. This will increase market shares and eventually profitability.
